It’s our 10th episode of 24 Solar Terms & Health!

Open arms to Rain Water, the second traditional Chinese solar term. According to an old Chinese saying, the rainfall in spring is as precious as oil. In Hangzhou, it’s a time featuring drizzles, bringing forth new life and blooming hope.

Health tips from our Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physician:

During Rain Water, rainfall increases while temperatures remain relatively low. From the TCM perspective, cold-dampness is the major harmful external factor that can weaken the body. In particular, the spleen in TCM notion (similar to the digestive system) is susceptible to cold-dampness.

Porridge is an ideal diet choice: Porridge is excellent for nourishing the spleen. During this time, rice, millet, beans, Poria Cocos, and coix seeds make great ingredients for porridge. It's best to avoid greasy or cold foods.

Limit sour food intake: Sour foods, such as plums and vinegar, are believed to have a "restraining" effect, which can exacerbate cold-dampness. Consuming too much sour food may also hinder the smooth flow of liver Qi, which is especially important in spring.

Keep your lower body warm: Watch out for the "late spring cold" where temperatures can suddenly drop. When adjusting your clothing, start by lightening your upper layers, but always keep your lower body warm. Protect your joints from wind, dampness, and cold to prevent arthritis.
