It’s our 11th episode of 24 Solar Terms & Health!

Today marks Awakening of Insects, the third traditional Chinese solar term. Winter’s slumber is over. As the sky roars with the first spring thunder, once-sleepy tiny creatures reappear in the fresh, rejuvenating air. Soon delicate blossoms will grace trees and new-fledged greenery will unfurl across the landscape.

Health tips from our Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physician:

Harmonize Liver Qi with Dietary Adjustments: During Awakening of Insects, spring's rising Yang energy requires balancing Liver Qi to prevent stagnation. Prioritize mildly sweet, green foods (e.g., spinach, spring bamboo shoots), and incorporate rose or dried tangerine peel tea to nourish and soothe the liver.

Engage in Gentle Morning Movement: Align with the energy of dawn by practicing Taichi or taking slow, mindful walks outdoors. These activities invigorate the flow of Qi while avoiding overexertion. Focus on deep diaphragmatic breathing to synchronize with nature's revitalizing rhythm.

Optimize Sleep-Wake Cycles: Adapt to lengthening daylight by rising earlier and sleeping by 11 pm (Liver repair hour). Use steamed eye masks to stimulate blood circulation around the eyes and enhance sleeping quality, supporting the Liver's blood-storing function.
