From a critically ill patient to a lively athlete: a more wonderful life after liver transplant

Mr. Chen has two “birthdays”, one is the day he came into the world, and the other is when he received a liver transplant.
Three years ago, with severe liver cirrhosis, he underwent liver transplantation, thus living his second chance at life.
Originally living a peaceful life, he was diagnosed with advanced liver cirrhosis. “My world seemed to collapse at the moment of diagnosis. I was reduced to despair.” The liver transplant was told to be the last lifeline.
He was then brought by his family to SRRSH for treatment later and started waiting for a new liver. During that long, torturous period, his condition worsened for a time, with gastrointestinal bleeding. Luckily, he rode out the waiting time thanks to an immediate, effective rescue.
In 2022, Vice President Dr. YU Hong and his team performed the liver transplant for him. The operation went on very well but the post-operative recovery was still a challenge.
Mr. Chen, however, didn’t bow before difficulties. Despite nearly 40 pounds of weight loss and fatigue, he stuck to his rehabilitation training in a positive frame of mind.
Over the last three years, his life has gradually returned to normal. He has tried things he had never dared to imagine, such as winter swimming. He even signed up for the 800m run and 4×100m relay at the 8th Chinese Transplant Games.
“The rebirth enables me to have a deeper understanding of life. I have learned to be grateful, strong, and value every day I live.” A more wonderful life awaits him to embrace, explore, and create.
