Six years ago, Miss Zhang was a leukemia patient, battling acute myelocytic leukemia (AML).

Today, Miss Zhang, who had recovered, became a medical student, aspiring to help more people in need.

Recently, 21-year-old Miss Zhang revisited Dr. XIAO Haowen, Director of Hematology and Cell Therapy at SRRSH in her outpatient clinic with heartwarming news: she is studying clinical medicine now and determined to become a doctor.

“I was once an ailing young girl fighting against AML, suffering from the pain brought by the disease. Now, I’m a future doctor. Thank you, Dr. Xiao, for giving me a second life and enabling me to help others in need. I want to be a good doctor just like you to bring hope to patients”, said Miss Zhang.

Back in 2019 when Miss Zhang was just a high school student, she was diagnosed with the disease. She and her family early looked for a hospital that can perform allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant. Finally, they came to Dr. Xiao’s outpatient clinic, who has rich experience in treating blood diseases. She was then admitted to SRRSH and received chemotherapy treatment.

Under Dr. Xiao’s treatment plan, she received hematopoietic stem cells and fully recovered with high-quality care. In 2020, she returned to school and enjoyed the rest of her studies.

Seeing her glowed with the optimism of youth—healthy, ambitious, and ready to carry the torch of healing—Dr. Xiao smiled with pride. A tribute to life, love and responsibility have been carried forward and passed along.
