Grain Rain
2025/04/20Welcome to the 14th episode of 24 SolarTerms & Health!
Grain Rain, the 6th Chinese solar term and the last term in spring, falls on April 20 this year. Derived from the old Chinese saying, “Rain brings up the growth of hundreds of grains,” this promising period delivers new vitality into the gentle brushes of spring’s palette.
Health tips from our Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physician:
Grain Rain is the second solar term in spring that is named after “rain”. As such, preventing dampness remains essential during this time.
Acupoint Stimulation for Dampness Relief: Use moxibustion, acupuncture, or massage to stimulate the following acupoints—Zusanli (ST36), Yinlingquan (SP9), Shuifen (RN9), and Pishu (BL20). These points help improve digestion, regulate water metabolism, and strengthen spleen function to combat excess humidity.
Sanjiao (“Triple Energizer”) Activation Exercise: The Sanjiao is the water passage throughout the body in TCM. It’s important to unblock and activate Sanjiao, particularly before summer arrives. Try this exercise: stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and inhale while raising your arms overhead (imagine reaching for the sky). Then, exhale as you fold forward, bringing your palms to the floor (imagine releasing into the ground).
Purifying Herbal Incense: Burning agarwood or atractylodes incense can help calm the mind, soothe liver Qi, and purify the humid air, all while creating a tranquil, meditative ambiance.
