Overview

The Surgical Oncology Department of SRRSH was founded in 1999 with a focus on breast, thyroid, and parathyroid diseases, digestive tract tumors, malignant melanoma, and soft tissue tumor. Due to increasing cases of breast disease, especially those of breast cancer, our department established the Breast Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center in 2011, as well as a breast cancer multidisciplinary diagnosis team in 2013, so that every patient with breast disease visiting the clinic can receive standardized treatment in parallel with the international standard.

 The Surgical Oncology Department of SRRSH is one of the doctoral degree awarding points and national key disciplines of Oncology at Zhejiang University. As a member of the Breast Cancer Network Collaboration Center of the Beijing Society for Cancer Prevention and Control, our department was also acknowledged as the National Quality Control Center in Breast Cancer Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment and the network MDT team leader unit in Zhejiang province. Furthermore, the Chinese Medical Doctor Association Breast Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Standardization and Minimally Invasive Rotary Resection Surgery Training Base were set in our department.

There are 33 physicians, one department assistant and one PI assistant in our department, including 6 chief physicians and 11 deputy chief physicians, one doctoral supervisor and 5 master's supervisors. All physicians own a master's or doctoral degree.  

The department has been cooperating with many international advanced breast treatment and research centers such as   Rome Linda University, Peter MacCallum Cancer Center in Melbourne, Australia, MD Anderson Cancer Center in the United States, Ohio State University Cancer Hospital in the United States, Shizuoka Prefectural General Hospital in Japan, Cambridge University Affiliated Hospital in the United Kingdom, and Mayo Clinic in the United States.

 

Advantages

Centered on medical treatment the department has four major functions: breast cancer research, disease prevention, medical education and patient care.

We take the lead in carrying out breast cancer breast preservation surgery, sentinel lymph node biopsy, breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery, breast endoscopic surgery, minimally invasive treatment of breast diseases and breast tube mirror in the province. In recent years, the department has introduced a daytime surgery model for breast tumors, so that patients with benign breast tumors and early breast cancer patients can be surgically admitted and discharged within 24 hours, which is more convenient for patients and reduces the cost of hospitalization. Since 2019, the department has cooperated with the team of Professor Zhang Songying of the Fertility Center of our hospital to carry out one-stop fertility preservation or ovarian protection treatment for young breast cancer patients to improve their quality of life.

In line with the international guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid and parathyroid tumors, the department strives to explore and carry out standardized minimally invasive treatment of thyroid cancer. Endoscopic assisted small incision thyroid surgery is routinely carried out in our department, and translactic total endoscopic thyroid cancer radical resection and oral thyroid surgery have achieved cervical scar-free. In addition, a screening and individualized treatment system for people at high risk of recurrence of thyroid cancer at the gene level is under the process.  

The department has also accumulated rich clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal tumors and body surface soft tissue tumors. Gastrointestinal tumors multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment mode has been adopted in our department. At the same time, individualized diagnosis and treatment for patients with early gastric cancer using minimally invasive technology combined with sentinel lymph node biopsy not only ensures the treatment efficacy, but also avoids excessive treatment. Besides, the department has extensive experience in melanoma sentinel lymph node biopsy and multidisciplinary assistance in comprehensive treatment.

 

Research:

Our research interests include early diagnosis, surgery and comprehensive treatment of breast cancer, diagnosis and surgical treatment of benign breast tumors, research on the mechanism of endocrine resistance and iron death mechanism of breast cancer, the establishment of breast cancer disease database and auxiliary clinical decision-making, the evaluation and integration of diagnosis and treatment of precision treatment efficacy of breast cancer based on real-time dynamic multi-molecular typing of images, intelligent auxiliary early diagnosis system for breast cancer with dynamic optical function imaging (DOBI) breast cancer, the establishment and verification of predictive models for complete pathological remission after neoadjuvant treatment of breast cancer patients based on 5G technology, the role of intervention strategies for breast cancer detection and prevention of multiple breast nodules and the prediction model of breast nodule cancer risk, and the study of immune escape mechanism of T lymphocyte proliferation in breast cancer microenvironment. 

Breast cancer prevention and screening: The blockchain platform of SRRSH, a guiding hospital, stores, manages and shares the image data of a variety of breast diagnostic devices (multi-source), and uses artificial intelligence methods to establish a diagnosis and treatment model for accurate breast screening and intelligent diagnosis.  It also explores the use of multi-source heterogeneous imaging data combined with artificial intelligence methods to implement accurate screening and intelligent diagnosis of breast cancer.

Patient care: Supported by the "Sail Club", "Milk Fruit Love", Kaihuai College and other nursing teams, we organize patient education and offer postoperative psychological guidance to patients. Nursing studies have been carried out, such as "Application of local cold compresses in the prevention of liposomal doxorubicin-related hand-foot syndrome", "Longitudinal study of negative emotions and post-traumatic growth of early spouses in the diagnosis of breast cancer patients" and "Improving the effectiveness of functional exercise in breast cancer patients". In addition, we obtained two utility model patents in patient care, namely "a rehabilitation function exercise rope" and "a wearable infusion stent".

In 2016, the MCCN project of the Mayo Clinic in the United States was launched to offer international synchronous diagnosis and treatment services to patients with complicated breast cancer. In 2017, the MDT clinic for complicated breast cancer opened.

Influence

In recent years, the department has participated in or presided over the clinical research of more than 20 international and domestic multi-center breast cancer latest drugs or new treatment models It actively explored the translational research of breast cancer and thyroid cancer from both clinical and basic aspects, laying a solid research foundation. Every year, the department holds large-scale continuing education projects such as the Shaw International Academic Week Oncology Surgery Session, the Minimally Invasive Breast Treatment Workshop, the Breast Cancer MDT Team Tour, and the Breast Thyroid Tumor Boutique Surgery Short Course, which improves the regional breast disease diagnosis and treatment.
