[Department Introduction]

After more than 20 years of development, the Department of Ultrasound in Medicine, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, has now become an ultrasound diagnosis and treatment center integrating medical treatment, scientific research, and teaching. At present, the department has a team of 106 doctors and nurses, consisting of 4 chief physicians, 10 deputy chief physicians, 14 attending physicians, 1 master tutor, 4 doctoral degree holders, and 58 master’s degree holders. The department currently has 56 sets of ultrasound diagnostic equipment, including GE LOGIQ E20, GE Voluson E10, Philips EPIQ 7C, Philips EPIQ 7, and other international advanced color Doppler ultrasound diagnostic instruments, which are distributed in 52 consulting rooms of Qingchun, Qiantang and Shuangling campuses. There are 2 standardized ultrasound intervention rooms, equipped with precise intervention technology platforms such as virtual fusion navigation. With comprehensive sub-specialties, the department covers all directions in ultrasound in medicine, which are mainly divided into five sub-specialties: abdominal ultrasound, superficial ultrasound, cardiovascular ultrasound, obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound, and ultrasound intervention. Other sub-specialties include gastrointestinal ultrasound, musculoskeletal ultrasound, peripheral vascular ultrasound, fetal echocardiography, and reproductive ultrasound. As of 2021, the department's annual diagnosis and treatment cases are more than 1.3 million, and the annual ultrasound intervention diagnosis and treatment cases are nearly 15,000.

In terms of scientific research, the department has always focused on advances in ultrasound technology and explored according to the actual needs of clinical practice (please refer to the "Research Direction and Scientific and Educational Achievements" page for details). As one of the teaching hospitals of Zhejiang University, the department undertakes all teaching tasks related to ultrasound diagnosis and treatment in the No.3 department of college of medicine, including the teaching of undergraduate, international and postgraduate students, standardized training of residents, and the teaching of advanced study programs for the whole country. In addition, the department hosts national and provincial medical continuing education programs every year, with about 300 trainees in each session. For 12 consecutive years, the "Update on Basic Skills Training and Application of Fetal Echocardiography" program has been regarded as an example of national continuing ultrasonic medicine education program, which is thought highly of by trainees and attracts great attention nationwide.

The staff of our department are members of the Chinese Medical Association. Some of our physicians serve as the vice chairman of the Young and Middle-aged Committee of the Ultrasound Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, member of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Group of the Ultrasound Branch of the Chinese Doctor Medical Association, member of the Chinese Association of Echocardiography, the Ultrasound Branch of Chinese Doctor Medical Association, vice chairman of the Quality Control Expert Group of the Practice Guideline of Prenatal Ultrasonic Diagnosis of the Chinese Doctor Medical Association, standing member of the Ultrasound Branch of the Chinese Association of Medical Imaging Technology, standing member of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Committee of Chinese Association of Ultrasound in Medicine and Engineering and Ultrasound Branch of Professional Committee of birth defect prevention and control of Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, deputy director of the Ultrasound Branch of the Zhejiang Medical Association and member of Zhejiang expert group on medical malpractice identification. Some of our physicians also serve on the editorial board and invited editorial board of Chinese Journal of Ultrasonography, Chinese Journal of Medical Ultrasound (Electronic Edition), Chinese Journal of Clinical Physicians, Biomedical Engineering and Clinical, Shanghai Medical Imaging, and Journal of Clinical Ultrasound Medicine.

At present, our department has carried out almost all routine ultrasound examinations, including those for eyes, thyroid, parotid gland, submandibular gland, lymph nodes, breast, chest, heart, great vessels, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidney, ureter, bladder, prostate, abdominal cavity, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries, seminal vesicle, scrotal and testicle and epididymis, spermatic cord, peripheral vascular, superficial soft tissue, such as pelvic floor and fetal organ or structure.
