Overview
Respiratory therapy is a professional discipline providing auxiliary diagnosis and treatment for patients with both acute and chronic cardio-pulmonary diseases. Based on an American model, the respiratory therapy department was founded in 1994, together with Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital. Departmental staff members have received advanced training at the American Loma Linda University and its affiliated hospital. Our department is the earliest established Chinese respiratory therapy group, which is of large scale, with standardized technical expertise.
Respiratory Therapists and Critical Care Doctors work together in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to discuss the breathing status of patients, and establish individual respiratory therapy programs. Respiratory Therapists will formulate and implement treatment plans to promote the rehabilitation of patients. These plans are based on physical examination, ventilator diagram analysis, blood tests and iconography information. Respiratory therapists provide patients with respiratory support and artificial airway management according to their needs and international guidelines.
The department has hosted the national training course on Respiratory Care and Progress since 1998, and has provided the latest knowledge of respiratory technology for thousands of students in China. In 2013, the respiratory therapy department collaborated with one of the top global 500 medical enterprises, and established the Training Center of Respiratory Therapy. After passing the assessment of International Council of Respiratory Care (ICRC), the Course has been adopted in the Center as a part of the ICRC global continuing educational program.
After 20 years of development, the department has formed a diversified, professional team, which consists of more than 40 repiratory therapists.

[Achievement of Research]
The department has undertaken a number of National Natural Science Fund projects, as well as provincial projects. More than 50 academic papers have been published (including 30-odd SCI papers). Additionally, as the chief editor and chief translator, the department has also participated in editing and translating many books related to respiratory therapy.
[International Exchange and Cooperation]
The department attaches great importance to the exchange and cooperation with domestic and foreign counterparts, and has a close relationship with a number of hospitals and institutions in the United States and Taiwan. Every year, foreign experts such as Leo Heunks from VU University Medical Center in the Netherlands are invited to the hospital for guidance and communication. They help employees learn advanced foreign professional skills and improve their foreign language communication skills at the same time. In addition, six senior respiratory departments has visited the Linda Medical Center in the United States for further study. Director Yuan Yuehua and Director Ge Huiqing are the first and present Chinese Governors of the American Association for Respiratory Therapy (AARC) and the International Council for Respiratory Therapy (ICRC) respectively.
