Endocrinology & Metabolism

1. Introduction: The Department of Endocrinology & Metabolism in Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital was established in 1994 with a history of 30-odd years. It is located at two campuses: Qingchun Campus and Qiantang Campus. Under the guidance of clinical experts from China and the United States, the Department makes and maintains progress in the fields of clinical health care, health education and quality improvement. It aims to deliver tangible benefits to patients. To this end, we have set up outpatient clinics for various endocrine and metabolic disorders, including type 1diabetes, diabetic complications, diabetic foot, obesity, thyroid diseases, hypertension, pituitary/adrenal diseases, and gout. Our department leads a team of 30 healthcare providers involved in clinical healthcare, academic medicine, research, and education, including 16 senior professional clinicians, 3 doctoral supervisors and 6 master supervisors. All clinicians obtained MD, Ph.D., or master’s degrees and half of them studied aboard in well-established medical centers in the United States, German, Canada, and Japan. Moreover, there are 4 clinical technicians responsible for screening and management of diabetic complications.

The Department of Endocrinology & Metabolism is a key medical discipline in Zhejiang Province; a key construction discipline of the School of Medicine, Zhejiang University; a National Residency Training Base of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases; and a doctoral degree conferring institution of endocrinology in Zhejiang Province. The former chairman of the Endocrine Branch of Zhejiang Medical Association and the director of the Endocrine and Metabolism Branch of Zhejiang Physician Association are also a part of the Department. Spanning the basic and clinical endocrine sciences, our department established one of the largest clinical research centers and ranks as the top cluster of academic medicine in Zhejiang Province. We have launched basic and clinical research activities to facilitate the understanding of endocrine disorders, including obesity, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and pancreatic beta-cell dysfunction. We also host conferences and seminars to promote the exchange of scientific information and ideas, and to assist in the knowledge distribution of endocrine diseases in the general population.

2. Technical Advantages: The clinicians in our department treat a large number of patients with endocrine and metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, diabetic foot, obesity, thyroid disease, pituitary disease, adrenal disease, gonadal disease, abnormal bone metabolism and other metabolic disorders. In addition to routinely carrying out various endocrine hormone stimulation tests, we have the following technical advantages:

lBilateral adrenal vein sampling

lDiabetes 3 "C" Treatment Techniques

lMetabolic and Bariatric Surgery

lFunctional Limb Salvage Techniques in Diabetic Patients

lProfessional Education by Diabetes Specialist Nurse

3. Research Specialties: The Department of Endocrinology & Metabolism has carried out a series of innovative clinical and basic research focusing on endocrine and metabolic disorders with numerous original findings throughout the past several decades. In recent years, the clinicians in our department have participated in the scientific projects of “the 11th Five-Year Plan” and “the 12th Five-Year Plan” and have presided over multiple projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (14 in total) and Natural Science Foundation of Zhejiang Province (over 20). We were also awarded the third prize in Zhejiang Science and Technology Progress Award and the second prize in Zhejiang Province Medicine & Health Science and Technology Innovation Award. Moreover, we have participated in the compilation of multiple clinical practice guidelines and consensus statements and have published over 200 original papers in the field of diabetes and metabolism. Our research mainly focuses on the following aspects:

lPathogenesis of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome

lEpigenetic modification and insulin resistance and fatty liver disease

lPancreatic beta-cell function

lThe pathogenesis and prevention of diabetic kidney disease

4. Unique Endocrine Medical Center: The Department of Endocrinology & Metabolism has focused on the management of diabetes and its related chronic complications as well as the integrated management of obesity. We have also developed multidisciplinary approaches to treating diabetic foot and adrenal diseases, including:

lMultidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment of diabetic foot disease and functional limb salvage techniques (MDT)

lMultidisciplinary management of obesity (MDT)

lMultidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment of adrenal disease (MDT)

lIntegrated Management of Metabolic Diseases Center (MMC)

5. Education and Training: The Department of Endocrinology & Metabolism oversees the training of medical students from the eight-year program, five-year program, overseas exchange program and the City College of Zhejiang University. Our department is an integral component of the National Residency Training Base of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases as well as the Diabetes Specialist Nurse Training Base in Zhejiang Province, undertaking the standardized training of residents and nurses.
